🚵♂️ Ride Report: Braemar MTB Loop – Scotland at Its Best
By Lewis Jones
There’s something about the Scottish Highlands that stirs the soul—especially when you're on two wheels. On a crisp Saturday morning, eight hardy (and slightly chilly) riders gathered at the Linn of Dee car park, ready to tackle a classic loop that showcases the very best of Cairngorms mountain biking.
🔁 The Route
Our plan was ambitious but rewarding: a loop from Linn of Dee to Linn of Quoich, through the stunning Clais Fhearnaig, past Derry Lodge, up into the Lairig an Laoigh, and back again. It’s a route that doesn’t boast huge mileage or towering elevation stats—but don’t be fooled. This ride packs a serious punch.
🌄 Trail Conditions & Terrain
Thanks to a run of dry weather, the trails were in prime condition. We were treated to a bit of everything:
Smooth, fast and flowy singletrack
Rocky and technical sections that demanded focus
Punchy climbs that tested the legs
Rooty descents that kept us on our toes
The variety made for a ride that was as mentally engaging as it was physically challenging. And while we didn’t summit any peaks, being surrounded by the towering Munros of the Cairngorms was more than enough to remind us we were deep in the mountains.
❄️ Weather & Camaraderie
The morning air had a definite bite to it, but spirits were high. There’s a special kind of camaraderie that comes from sharing a cold start and a tough trail. New faces blended seamlessly with seasoned members, and it was great to see the group gel so naturally.
Special mention to Jack, who brought the average age down considerably—and the energy levels up! It’s always encouraging to see younger riders getting stuck in and loving the adventure.
☕ The Obligatory Café Stop
No Scottish MTB ride is complete without a café stop, and we made sure to uphold tradition. Warm drinks, cake, and a chance to thaw out and relive the best (and worst!) moments of the ride made for a perfect end to the day.
💬 Reflections
This ride was a reminder of why we do this. The challenge, the landscape, the company—it all came together in a way that only the Highlands can deliver. Whether you’re a seasoned rider or just getting started, routes like this are what make Scottish mountain biking so special.
Here’s to many more days like this. And as for these old legs? Still got a few good miles left in them yet.
